Bamboo: A Material for Landscape and Garden Design

Bamboo: A Material for Landscape and Garden Design

$58.72

Bamboo and its many varieties are becoming ever more popular as a design material for landscapes, squares, and gardens. With its widely varying hardiness, height, and leaf structure, the grass can be cultivated under many different conditions, and because of its special physical characteristics it can also be used as a material in related domains such as architecture, furniture design, and flower arrangement. The extensive technical section of the book describes the properties and habitat requirements of the plant, the breeding of varieties, and the methods of propagation. It then goes on to explore its use and significance in urban and natural settings. Authors with technical expertise in the relevant fields, including the director of the Oprins bamboo tree nursery, and striking color illustrations convey exhaustive technical and botanical information and examples of the creative use of bamboo, especially in urban and natural settings.

Children won’t be able to put down Nature Unfolds, an exciting new series that uses spectacular fold-out illustrations to involve children in exploring habitats. Each book divides a particular habitat into its natural layers. The first spread features an overview of the entire habitat, which then opens up to reveal a glorious 11 3/4 x 34 3/4" fold-out illustration. Turning the pages reveals a closer in depth look at the animals and plant life one layer at a time. Each book contains fascinating information, two lavish fold-out illustrations, and a key listing wildlife and plant life. Children will be engrossed by searching for specific animals and plants in these amazingly detailed, full-color fold-outs. Children will be fascinated by the wealth of animal and plant life in Nature Unfolds The Poles, a richly illustrated new book that takes readers on a journey from the Antarctic and its islands to the polar desert and tundra of the Arctic. Amazing information and two spectacular fold-out illustrations help children identify the wildlife and plants that live: — on the Antarctic continent — around the pack ice — on and around the Antarctic and oceanic islands — in the Arctic polar desert — in the tundra — on and around the coastlands — in the Arctic oceans and seas

Bamboo Fences

Bamboo Fences

$36.28

Bamboo has emerged as the building material of choice for the twenty-first century. Designers in every field from architecture to aeronautics are discovering ever more innovative uses for the miracle plant. Five times stronger than concrete and flexible enough to be woven like silk, bamboo has for millennia been an indispensable necessity of life for cultures around the world. Botanically classified as a grass, it is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. Its abundance and extreme durability have made it a natural choice as the raw material for fences and partitions. Indeed, in Japan, bamboo fence building has become an art form, and endless varieties of bamboo fences exist, from simple picket designs to elaborate fences woven with bamboo branches. Bamboo Fences provides a detailed look at the complex art of bamboo fence design and presents these unique structures in more than 250 photographs and line drawings. Author Isao Yoshikawa gives a brief overview of the history of bamboo fence building in Japan and classifies the different designs by type. A glossary provides an explanation of Japanese fence names and structural terms. Yoshikawa explains how the wide range of fence designs had its origin partly in the full development of the tea ceremony during the sixteenth century, when elegant bamboo fences became important elements of tea ceremony gardens. Bamboo partitions were used in Zen temples, and from there spread to ordinary homes. Many fence styles are named for the temple in which the first of their kind was built. From the widely used ‘four-eyed fence’ (yotsume-gaki) and the fine ‘raincoat fence’ (mino-gaki) to the expensive ‘spicebush fence’ (kuromoji-gaki), the natural color and texture of these exquisite bamboo fences could complement any landscape. Whether you plan to use bamboo to bring privacy to your yard, Zen to your garden, or are just seeking an environmentally friendly alternative to chain-link or wood; the simple beauty of these Japanese bamboo fences is sure to inspire.

Bamboo in Japan

Bamboo in Japan

$35.47

For centuries, bamboo has fascinated legions of craftspeople, plant lovers and devotees of the handcrafted object. And nowhere is bamboo used more elegantly and distinctly than in Japan. Its presence touches every part of daily life-art, crafts, design, literature, and food. Its beauty enlivens textile designs, restaurant interiors, and holiday festivities. Artist and writer Nancy Moore Bess set out to discover just how bamboo-crafted objects attained such heights in Japan. Her travels took her throughout the country and through centuries of accumulated artifacts. After five years of dedicated research and study, she has assembled an unparalleled collection of writings and photographs that uncover the hidden beauty of bamboo. Bess unveils the boundless uses of this versatile material in Japan, ranging from the most elegant and refined to the most humble. She shows bamboo’s applications in the garden and home, in the cherished accessories of the tea ceremony and flower arranging, and in an endless array of crafts from elaborate baskets to colorful kites and dolls. With illuminating text and over 250 exquisite photographs, illustrations, and artwork, Bess reveals the intricacies and resources of this lovely versatile plant. She explores the Japanese reverence for bamboo’s natural beauty, adding immeasurably to our knowledge of the Asian sensibility and lifestyle. AN ON-LINE INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR] Q. Could you tell us a little about your background? A. I am fond of saying that I’m a basketmaker from California. It is true, but … I have lived on the east coast more years than those early, influential ones in California. I learned to make baskets on 8th Avenue in New York City. Basketry is the focus of my professional life. I weave, teach, and exhibit. No matter where I travel, I find basketmakers and a conversation begins. Much of my first trip in Japan (11 months in 1986-87) was devoted to meeting basketmakers and watching them work. Q. What motivated you to write this book? / What got you started? A. When I first wrote the book proposal, I was thinking only of those basketmakers I had met in Japan – how hard they worked, how varied their baskets, how ubiquitous basketry was in Japan. As the book topic broadened to include ALL of bamboo in Japan, I found that I had much to learn, and the research began. Each interview led to more library work. Each book in the library led to more interviews. It was a never-ending circle for five years. I still can’t resist a good book that reveals something new to me about bamboo in Japan. Q. Could you tell us a little about the contents of the book? A. The main thesis of the book is that bamboo touches every aspect in daily life in Japan, even in urban Tokyo or Osaka. At first, everyone tends to think this is an overly ‘romantic’ approach; however, upon more careful examination (or reading of Bamboo in Japan), it becomes clear that, unlike other single ‘material’ in Japan, bamb
