Eating A Raw Food Diet

Raw Food Diet – a Novel Way to Help Weight Loss
Raw food diets are becoming more widespread, not only amongst people who are one of the types of vegetarians, but also amongst people who eat conventional food.
These people believe that if food is heated to over 115 degrees F the enzymes in the food are destroyed. It’s said that these enzymes assist in the digestion and absorption of food in the body.
For a person to be considered a raw food person then 75% of the diet must consist of raw and uncooked food. This means raw vegetables, fruits, seeds, grains, nuts and dried fruits.
This type of food is low in all sorts of fats and oils compared to regular cooked food; it has fewer calories and sodium products, but has a higher fiber content together with more trace elements and vitamins. These last two are lost when food is heated.
The benefits of eating a raw food diet are an improvement in digestion; an increase in physical energy; reduced risks of heart problems, diabetes and some types of cancer. As it also leads to weight loss, many overweight people are changing over to a diet consisting mainly of uncooked food.
Raw food exponents usually eat organic food including dried fruits such as dates, figs, sultanas, raisins; a selection of unprocessed, raw nuts; dried pulses and legumes. The liquid component of their diet comes from mineral water, coconut milk and self-prepared fruit and vegetable juices.
Some raw food people would eat raw animal products such as meat and fish. These can be made more palatable by marinating in a suitable liquid. Not only would this improve the flavor, it would also tenderize the meat. This is particularly so with fish.
Although eating uncooked food is considered to be healthy, for people changing over from a conventional diet there may be some initial, but short lived, difficulties. Nausea, headaches and other slight discomforts may be experienced if a person’s previous diet included plenty of sugar and caffeine. The discomfort should last for a few days only.
A raw food diet is not suitable for pregnant or nursing women, or young children. People with certain medical conditions should not eat a raw food diet. Medical advice should be sought at all times.
Because of the absence of some trace minerals, vitamins and other essential components of a healthy diet, it will be necessary to enhance the diet with suitable supplements. Again advice from a nutritionist or doctor should be taken.
Although the raw food supporters claim that cooking destroys the enzymes in food thus making it more difficult for the digestive system to deal with food, many nutritionists and health experts dismiss this as nonsense. They point to the fact that the human body and its digestive system is more than capable of dealing with all the food eaten, and that the enzymes from the raw food are not needed.
In spite of this opinion, however, the number of people world wide changing over to a diet based on raw and uncooked food is increasing.

Health Food Junkies: The Rise of Orthorexia Nervosa – The Health Food Eating Disorder $19.52 The first book to identify the eating disorder orthorexia nervosa-an obsession with eating healthfully-and offer expert advice on how to treat it. As Americans become better informed about health, more and more people have turned to diet as a way to lose weight and keep themselves in peak condition. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa-disorders in which the sufferer focuses on the quantity of food eaten-have been highly documented over the past decade. But as Dr. Steven Bratman asserts in this breakthrough book, for many people, eating "correctly" has become an equally harmful obsession, one that causes them to adopt progressively more rigid diets that not only eliminate crucial nutrients and food groups, but ultimately cost them their overall health, personal relationships, and emotional well-being. Health Food Junkies is the first book to identify this new eating disorder, orthorexia nervosa, and to offer detailed, practical advice on how to cope with and overcome it. Orthorexia nervosa occurs when the victim becomes obsessed, not with the "quantity" of food eaten, but the "quality" of the food. What starts as a devotion to healthy eating can evolve into a pattern of incredibly strict diets; victims become so focused on eating a "pure" diet (usually raw vegetables and grains) that the planning and preparation of food come to play the dominant role in their lives. Health Food Junkies provides an expert analysis of some of today’s most popular diets-from The Zone to macrobiotics, raw-foodism to food allergy elimination-and shows not only how they can lead to orthorexia, but how they are often built on faulty logic rather than sound medical advice. Offering expert insight gleaned from his work with orthorexia patients, Dr. Bratman outlines the symptoms of orthorexia, describes its progression, and shows readers how to diagnose the condition. Finally, Dr. Bratman offers practical suggestions for intervention and treatment, giving readers the tools they need to conquer this painful disorder, rediscover the joys of eating, and reclaim their lives. "From the Hardcover edition." |

Food for Thought: Essays on Eating and Culture $3.95 Historically, few topics have attracted as much scholarly, professional, or popular attention as food and eating-as one might expect, considering the fundamental role of food in basic human survival. Almost daily, a new food documentary, cooking show, diet program, food guru, or eating movement arises to challenge yesterday’s dietary truths and the ways we think about dining. This work brings together voices from a wide range of disciplines, providing a fascinating feast of scholarly perspectives on food and eating practices, contemporary and historic, local and global. Nineteen essays cover a vast array of food-related topics, including the ever-increasing problems of agricultural globalization, the contemporary mass-marketing of a formerly grassroots movement for organic food production, the Food Network’s successful mediation of social class, the widely popular phenomenon of professional competitive eating and current trends in "culinary tourism" and fast food advertising. |

The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating $11.59 The remarkable amusing and inspiring adventures of a Canadian couple who make a year-long attempt to eat foods grown and produced within a 100-mile radius of their apartment. When Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon learned that the average ingredient in a North American meal travels 1 500 miles from farm to plate they decided to launch a simple experiment to reconnect with the people and places that produced what they ate. For one year they would only consume food that came from within a 100-mile radius of their Vancouver apartment. The 100-Mile Diet was born. The couple’s discoveries sometimes shook their resolve. It would be a year without sugar Cheerios olive oil rice Pizza Pops beer and much much more. Yet local eating has turned out to be a life lesson in pleasures that are always close at hand. They met the revolutionary farmers and modern-day hunter-gatherers who are changing the way we think about food. They got personal with issues ranging from global economics to biodiversity. They called on the wisdom of grandmothers and immersed themselves in the seasons. They discovered a host of new flavours from gooseberry wine to sunchokes to turnip sandwiches foods that they never would have guessed were on their doorstep. The 100-Mile Diet struck a deeper chord than anyone could have predicted attracting media and grassroots interest that spanned the globe. The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating tells the full story from the insights to the kitchen disasters as the authors transform from megamart shoppers to self-sufficient urban pioneers. The 100-Mile Diet is a pathway home for anybody anywhere. Call me naive but I never knew that flour would be struck from our 100-Mile Diet. Wheat products are just so ubiquitous "the staff of life " that I had hazily imagined the stuff must be grown everywhere. But of course: I had never seen a field of wheat anywhere close to Vancouver and my mental images of late-afternoon light falling on golden fields of grain were all from my childhood on the Canadian prairies. What I was able to find was Anita’s Organic Grain & Flour Mill about 60 miles up the Fraser River valley. I called and learned that Anita’s nearest grain suppliers were at least 800 miles away by road. She sounded sorry for me. Would it be a year until I tasted a pie? Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100-Mile Diet $3.95 The remarkable, amusing and inspiring adventures of a Canadian couple who make a year-long attempt to eat foods grown and produced within a 100-mile radius of their apartment. When Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon learned that the average ingredient in a North American meal travels 1,500 miles from farm to plate, they decided to launch a simple experiment to reconnect with the people and places that produced what they ate. For one year, they would only consume food that came from within a 100-mile radius of their Vancouver apartment. The 100-Mile Diet was born. The couple’s discoveries sometimes shook their resolve. It would be a year without sugar, Cheerios, olive oil, rice, Pizza Pops, beer, and much, much more. Yet local eating has turned out to be a life lesson in pleasures that are always close at hand. They met the revolutionary farmers and modern-day hunter-gatherers who are changing the way we think about food. They got personal with issues ranging from global economics to biodiversity. They called on the wisdom of grandmothers, and immersed themselves in the seasons. They discovered a host of new flavours, from gooseberry wine to sunchokes to turnip sandwiches, foods that they never would have guessed were on their doorstep. The 100-Mile Diet struck a deeper chord than anyone could have predicted, attracting media and grassroots interest that spanned the globe. The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating tells the full story, from the insights to the kitchen disasters, as the authors transform from megamart shoppers to self-sufficient urban pioneers. The 100-Mile Diet is a pathway home for anybody, anywhere. "Call me naive, but I never knew that flour would be struck from our 100-Mile Diet. Wheat products are just so ubiquitous, "the staff of life," that I had hazily imagined the stuff must be grown everywhere. But of course: I had never seen a field of wheat anywhere close to Vancouver, and my mental images of late-afternoon light falling on golden fields of grain were all from my childhood on the Canadian prairies. What I was able to find was Anita’s Organic Grain & Flour Mill, about 60 miles up the Fraser River valley. I called, and learned that Anita’s nearest grain suppliers were at least 800 miles away by road. She sounded sorry for me. Would it be a year until I tasted a pie?
